An Energetic Antioxidant

Alpha-lipoic acid is an important part of the process that turns sugar into energy in our bodies. Supplements of alpha-lipoic acid can lead to increases in available energy. Alpha-lipoic acid is also a useful and unique antioxidant, which, in addition to providing its own benefits, also is the key to restoring and recycling other antioxidants, such as vitamin C, E and glutathione.

A "Perfect Antioxidant"
Alpha-lipoic acid meets most of the criteria to be classified as the "master" antioxidant. Its unique chemical structure gives it a wide range of actions. Alpha-lipoic acid is readily "reduced" to dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) and DHLA can also be readily restored to alpha-lipoic acid. These two chemicals function together in very complex enzymatic processes, as well as helping regenerate other antioxidants. As a "perfect" antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid (and DHLA) has beneficial interactions with other antioxidants. For example: recycling vitamin C, which in turn recycles vitamin E: reducing oxidized glutathione, which also recycles vitamin E, etc. Alpha-lipoic acid may have beneficial effects in inhibiting HIV-1 or controlling inflammation-regulating genes; these interactions are very complex, however, and require much further research.

Protection Against Diabetes
Alpha-lipoic acid may play a role in the protection against Type 1 diabetes and as a tool in mitigating the symptoms of this disease. Studies show that alpha-lipoic acid given intra-peritoneally for 10 days before and after a diabetes accelerator halved the number of non-obese, diabetes-prone mice who contracted Type 1 diabetes. Alpha-lipoic acid levels are known to be low in diabetic animals. This may interfere with the utilization of glucose in the glycolytic cycle, so supplementation of alpha-lipoic acid may help reduce the problem. Alpha-lipoic acid therapy for the pain from diabetic polyneuropathy (300 to 600 mg per day) has been approved in Germany as a result of clinical studies. And finally, because DHLA recycles vitamin C, alpha-lipoic acid can protect against cataracts caused by high blood sugar blocking replacement of vitamin C.

Radiation Injury
Radiation injury causes a profusion of free radicals. Twenty-eight days of alpha-lipoic acid therapy in children living in Chernobyl-poisoned areas reduced blood peroxidation to levels seen in non-poisoned children. Alpha-lipoic acid, with vitamin E, reduced it below normal levels: vitamin E alone was ineffective.
